Rodeo!

Howdy! My name is Susie and my dad will be taking me to a rodeo this week. Rodeo is a sport that began in Spain and Mexico as cattle herding. It is also the official sport in Texas, where I live. I'm really excited to go because there will be cowboys, cowgirls and rodeo clowns!

There are lots of competitions that occur in a rodeo. My favorite one is barrel racing. Cowgirls ride their horses around three barrels. The barrels are arranged in the shape of a triangle, also known as a cloverleaf pattern. The fastest person to zigzag through the barrels, without knocking them over, wins!
Another fun event to watch is bull riding. Riders are given points based on how well they ride and how long they stay on the bull. The rodeo clown distracts the bull by wearing bright clothes and running around. The funniest rodeo clown is the one that jumps in and out of a padded barrel.
