Paulina's Hobby - Wycinanki !

Hi, my name is Paulina! My sister and I like to make Wycinanki (Vee-che-non-key) on our spare time with our grandma. Wycinanki are Polish folk art paper cut-outs. They are so much fun to make.

My grandmother tells me that the first paper cut-outs in Poland where somewhere in the mid 1800's. That's a long time ago! It was developed as a unique folk art tradition by peasants who often used it to decorate their homes, or give them as gifts. My grandma gave me my first Wycinanki.

The designs I like to make are very colorful and are usually inspired by nature and geometric shapes. I use a variety of colors and shapes such as birds, plants and rural scenes. Sometimes I layer them in different (different colors placed one on top of another) to make more colorful and intricate designs.

Today in Poland, it is no longer common to use the Wycinanki to decorate your home, but some people still make them to give as gifts. I like to make them on my free time to give to family and friends.
