| Heidi's traditional pastime: Yodeling!
Heidi and Niklas, being from Switzerland, have grown up to the sounds of yodeling! Yodeling is a type of singing without words. The singer will sing a note and rapidly change the pitch from high to low and back again. The fastest yodel ever took place in Germany where someone used 22 tones in one second!
In Switzerland, yodeling started in the Alps. Cow herders yodeled to communicate between one another and their herds in the mountains! True yodeling doesn't have any words, but verses and stories started being sung when the cow herders started hanging out in the villages. Heidi has found that the best places for yodeling are places with an echo, like in the mountains where she lives.
The word yodel comes from an old German word, jôlen, which meant shrieking with joy! Joy is what happens when Heidi and Niklas yodel together!
