The Sydney Opera House

Andrew’s country is home to one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, the Sydney Opera House! Andrew can’t wait to visit it!

Andrew is getting ready to travel with his family from his home in the Outback to Sydney to see many sites, including the Sydney Opera House! His parents have told him stories of the grand opening Australia had for the Opera House in 1973. Queen Elizabeth II attended and there were huge fireworks!

The Opera House is home to Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Andrew and his family are going to hear the Symphony. Andrew is excited to see the roof that is shaped like huge sails. In school, Andrew learned that the roof is made of over 1 million glazed granite tiles from Sweden.

The Sydney Opera House is 600 feet high and over 300 feet across! It has over 1000 rooms, including 5 theaters, 5 rehearsal spaces, 2 main halls, 4 restaurants plus souvenir shops! The Concert hall (one of the 5 theaters) houses the Sydney Opera House Grand Organ, the largest pipe organ of its kind in the world with over 10,000 pipes!
